Rehearsal Art Book Fair Is Bringing a Book Fair Back to Books

We are thrilled to launch the debut of the Rehearsal Art Book Fair, taking place on September 15 and 16 in New York City’s Lower East Side. The fair will unfold within the theater space and bathhouse-converted classrooms of University Settlement — a historical community hub that has supported immigrant workers and low-income families since the 19th century.

Co-organized voluntarily by independent bookstore Bungee Space (a photography, image study- and criticism-focused art book store based in New York) and Accent Sisters (a speakeasy, literature bookstore, and publishing studio based in New Jersey), Rehearsal Art Book Fair seeks to explore and present the essence of independent art and literary publishing within highly capitalized and/or censored contexts. It features over 45 independent publishers, collectives, and individuals both local from New York and from all over the world.

Opening Night on September 15 begins with the VIP preview and an open mic stand-up event. Publishing Punchlines: Poos from the Press brings together publishers, editors, and industry professionals for a night of laughter and storytelling. This unique event is intended to provide a platform for publishing insiders to share their funniest and craziest anecdotes, mishaps, and encounters.

The book fair program features a special exhibition, Sam iz Dat: (independent/underground) publications by Chinese-speaking Creators, which brings over 200 curated Samizdat titles from mainland China to the US for the first time. With this presentation, we hope to signify our appreciation for the consistent practice of bookmaking as personal rehearsals and revolutions. We aspire for its impact to endure far into the future, leaving behind reference materials for future research.

Opening Night is Friday, September 15, 7:30–10pm (ET). Fair hours are Friday, September 15, 7:30–10pm; and Saturday, September 16, 11am–7:30pm.
