Rolled strips of wet newspaper add depth to detailed animal sculptures

Who would’ve thought that strips of rolled newspaper could actually be used for something in art besides papier-mâché?

Japanese paper artist Chie Hitotsuyama does just that when creating detailed animal sculptures. The technique is effective in creating the appearance of fur and texture on each animal’s body. The artist believes this to be a great way of adding depth and dynamic qualities to her figures. “More than anything else, I’m particular about the realistic feel of the animals,” she says, “They are living ordinary everyday lives just like us. I would like to keep insisting on reality and producing my life-sized work as much as possible in order to convey their lives.” Check out some of her sculptures below and find more on Strictly Paper and on her website.
