Measuring over seven feet tall, the print’s verticality suggests a Chinese hanging scroll. Graduated in size to evoke depth and ambience despite their monochromatic colors, the stenciled dots create what Lichtenstein called “atmospherics” that are far more subtle than he had hitherto accomplished, achieving a visual sophistication on par with traditional Song artists like Xia Gui.
