Press Release:

The American artist Sam Lewitt (° 1981) studies the distribution of goods and capital in the world economy. For his first Belgian solo exhibition, he starts from the recent closure and demolition of Ford Genk, formerly an important employer in the region.

While the Ford Genk buildings were being demolished, construction began on the new wing of Z33 in neighboring Hasselt. Lewitt reworks this economic change. He is setting up a new building block production line in Z33 with elements from the demolished factory and land from the Ford site in Genk. The different phases of the production process – the compression, curing and stacking – are separated by doors and tarpaulins of the former factory. This phased way of presenting raises questions about the ‘work’. Is it an activity or a product?

In the exhibition rooms, two stone machines process soil from the Ford site. These manual devices were once designed for residential construction in so-called developing countries. They made it possible to use local land for the construction of houses and roads. Later, small self-sufficient ecological housing forms embraced the tool. The stone machines connect Z33 with other production sites and raise the question of how artistic production is related to a place. The devices are intended to process local soil, but can be used anywhere. This is where Lewitt’s work differs from site-specific art. That art is made for one specific place. However, the Genk Ford site – which is currently being redeveloped as a logistics hub – is already connected to many other places at home and abroad.
