Sci-fi book illustrations from the 1800s by Alphonse de Neuville

These illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou were produced for the 1871 Hetzel edition of Jules Verne’s pioneering sci-fi novel “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.” Even though they were printed over a century ago these drawings hold their own when compared to modern illustration.

By today’s standards, the notion of a giant sea creature seems like a B-movie cliché, but back then these drawings were the first fully realized glimpse into the French novelist’s vision. Dark, strange and macabre, these highly detailed illustrations bring life to the classic underwater adventure novel.
