Scientists Create Contact Lenses That Will Allow Users To Zoom In By Blinking Twice

Scientists at the University of California, San Diego, are testing out an incredible new piece of technology – contact lenses that would allow users to zoom in by simply blinking. In a recently published paper titled “A Biomimetic Soft Lens Controlled by Electrooculographic Signal”, the scientists explained how these new contact lenses differ from some previously developed ones who were either controlled manually or used pre-written programs.

These new contact lenses would allow users to zoom in just by blinking

They use electrooculographic signals generated by eye movements to control the movement and focal length of the lens, making them unique of its kind.

The lens is controlled by eye movements and double blinking

The lens is controlled via electrodes that mimic the muscles of the eye.

Currently, the contact lenses are still in the prototype phase

Even though the prototype contact lens looks like a messy bunch of microchips and wires, it’s just a question of time before they become small enough to easily fit under your eyelids.

There’s still a long way to go before these lenses become widely available but it’s amazing to see what modern technology can do

Scientists say this Blade Runner-esque lens has the potential to one day be used in visual prostheses, adjustable glasses, and remotely operated robotics.
