Sharks are stars in the new book of National Geographic underwater photographer Brian Skerry

Having spent more than 30 years and approximately 10,000 hours playing in the world’s oceans, Brian Skerry has already collected thousands of incredible and fascinating underwater photographs. And just recently, he published a photo book about his most prized subject, sharks – and we couldn’t be any more thrilled.

Sharks are undoubtedly one of the most misunderstood sea creatures in the world. Hundreds of movies are made to depict the perils of being attacked by a shark, misleading most, if not all, of the global population. The truth is, millions of sharks are being poached and killed every year due to the rise in popularity of shark fin soup.

Skerry’s first encounter with a shark was back in 1982 and has since been truly fascinated with the creature. “I became a photographer because I love looking at pictures and because I am passionate about nature. Being able to combine these things means a great deal to me,” Skerry noted.
