Showing: Jonathan Chapline – “Material Memory” @ The Hole

Material Memory, a solo show from Jonathan Chapline opened last week at The Hole in New York City. Set against an eye-catching floor-to-ceiling gridded out gallery space, the Brooklyn-based artist’s digital aesthetics are perfectly accentuated by the Tron-like backdrop. Although he works with traditional subject matter like domestic interiors, still lifes, bathers, it is Chapline’s use 3D programs to render artworks followed by hand painting with acrylic and flashe on panel that make them unique, along with his masterful use of color gradients and lighting. Rounding out the show in the middle of the space is a sculpture that looks like it has jumped right out of one of the paintings.
