Showing: Urs Fischer – “Things” @ Gagosian

With just one sculptural installation dominating Gagosian’s 511 Fifth Avenue space in Manhattan, Urs Fischer makes a bold statement about the nature of life itself. Constructed with aluminum and standing more than 10 feet tall, the life-size rhinoceros seems to absorb an assortment of everyday objects like a rollaway luggage, copy machine, car door and tires, toilet, vacuum cleaner, shovel, and laptop. With this piece, the Swiss-born artist hints that existences itself is “an accumulation, a collective gathering of physical and metaphorical baggage.” This installation is on display in conjunction with Sōtatsu, an exhibition of new paintings by Fischer at the gallery’s 980 Madison Avenue location.
