Smart geothermal technology keeps outdoor community cool

Challenging landscapes have been tactically avoided by civilizations for centuries, but there are inevitably some that linger in modern inhabited areas. Nice Architects seized the opportunity for innovation when entering a call for proposals for a site located in a hot climate near low wetlands in Adelaide, Southern Australia.

An urban quarter called ‘The Hill’ creates an environment where people and nature exist in enhanced but natural harmony. The ‘hill is actually an ecologically sustainable outdoor climate control mechanism for the close community recreation area. Under the large mound is a collection of recycled building demolition remains with clever interior technologies like subsidence cooling and geothermal exchange. ‘The Hill’ converts the abundance of heat energy into cool air and releases it through thermal chimneys making this unique outdoor space enjoyable on the hottest of summer days.
