Someone Asks Managers What Made Them Fire An Employee On Their First Day, And This Story Goes Viral

Getting fired on your first day is really something. I mean, how incompetent or just downright lazy do you have to be to lose your job just after you started it? To find out the answers to these questions, redditor Lo-Fi_Kuzco created a post, asking, “Managers of Reddit, what made you fire an employee on their first day?”

The call was immediately answered. The post has received over 16K upvotes and 5.6K comments, many of which were crazy stories that are hard to believe actually happened. One of them, however, was a little different.

Plumpuddingdog recalled a time they had to lay off an old guy before he kept falling asleep during work straight from the get-go. But what earned their response 32.4K upvotes and plenty of reddit awards wasn’t the firing. Rather, the wholesome re-hiring of the same man months later. Scroll down to learn how everything unfolded!

I bet that’s an ending you didn’t expect! Hooray for the old guy. However, you can’t blame the manager for their decision to fire him in the beginning as well. They were working with very limited information.

And if there’s something we can learn from the entire thread, it’s that the first day sets the tone for the rest of your career in a particular organization. “Most of us remember our first days at every job because of the heightened pressure to impress,” Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert told Business Insider. “But you can reduce your anxiety by being as meticulous in planning your first day as you were in securing your new position.”

According to her, the first thing a person can do before opening the office door is to prepare both practical and general questions about how you can be most successful in the role. “By now you have enough background on the company to integrate more in-depth questions at your orientation meetings. Have a list of questions handy for managers you think you might meet. Make sure you also have a contact in HR in case you have very basic inquiries before you start or on your first day.”

Another good idea is to come up with a 30-second explainer of who you are and where you were before. Your new colleagues will likely want to get to know you!

Of course, it’s every new employee’s dream to realize that people noted how brilliant and charming they are. Or how they seem to understand the company so fast. But that can lead to a lot of wasted energy even faster. Relax, you’ll impress everyone as time goes by, naturally. If you’ll put in the effort!
