Nuke Your Parents

And should you become parents – Nuke yourself. A swift scud to the dome. Remember scuds? A serious threat in their time. Like bazookas and quicksand. Left behind in their decades. Decades don’t really work in the way we think they do. These convenient chunks of time that have their own theme. But the events and repercussions spill over from one to the next and are forever haunted by the phantoms of past decades. Time used to depend on where you are but now it’s the same everywhere you go. Right now, America is having its hardcore moment. Maybe you lived through your own personal hardcore moment yourself. When you were 14. All that spraycan skate rat hip hop punk rock don’t stop. So it’s funny now when Mum uses ACAB in scrabble. It’s like, mum! That’s what I’ve been saying!

Oliver Payne lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his BFA from Kingston University of Fine Art in London. Recent exhibitions have been organized by Herald St in London, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise in New York, Federico Vavassori in Milan, Nanzuka Underground in Tokyo, Aishonanzuka in Hong Kong, and 356 Mission in Los Angeles. In collaboration with Nick Relph, Payne received the Golden Lion award at the 43rd edition of the Venice Biennale. Payne’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Tate Britain in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo.

Payne leads a graduate seminar called Video Game Critical Theory at Art Center in Pasadena, and is also the publisher of Safe Crackers fanzine. Payne has organized an ongoing series of performances titled, “Chill Out” in which he requires all mobile phone and internet systems to be turned off in order to allow the public to immerse in a listening session for “Chill Out,” the concept album by late-80s British house band KLF. The most recent iteration of “Chill Out” was hosted by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York last year.

Kevin Bouton-Scott lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his MFA from Art Center in Pasadena in 2018.
