South Villa, a five-story penthouse in the award-winning Clifton Terraces apartments on Victoria Road, Cape Town.

The terraced shape of the building was designed by the architects of SAOTA. Deep overhangs and a restrained range of natural materials perfectly blend into the beautiful natural surroundings, while the landscaped terraces on every level ensure that the building blends in more effectively with its surroundings over time. The interior and interior architecture of ARRCC and OKHA is stylistically connected to the modern movement of the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s. Please read more below the following image.

Each apartment effortlessly combines the latest technologies with security, service, and amenities that ensure a summer or year-round lifestyle around the clock. With the seamlessly integrated home automation system, almost every aspect of the villa can be remotely controlled and personalized, including elevator, pool, and WiFi.

“What started out as a normal interior architecture brief quickly evolved into my passion project with a focus on coupling global design and South African art and craftsmanship,” says the international client. The client felt it was a natural choice to work with ARRCC and OKHA on re-imagining South Villa’s interior architecture and interior design respectively. “SAOTA, ARRCC, and OKHA are each thought leaders in their own rights and as a group, their skills and strengths are even further compounded,” he adds.

A private elevator enters the Clifton Terraces via the stone-clad reception area and climbs six levels to the penthouse. It opens up to a hallway with a full slab of fantasy marble before reaching the private lobby of the penthouse. Here a provocative layer of oak and brass inlay accents come together with anthracite-gray rib wood strips in a backlit plate made of Verde Fume Onicex under a shadow skylight and LED-illuminated walls.

The penthouse also serves as a private art gallery, curated by OKHA in collaboration with the customer and showing works by galleries such as SMAC, What If the World, and Southern Guild. Artists include Chris Soal, Galia Gluckman, Michele Mathison, Alexandra Karakashian, Mongezi Ncaphayi, Pierre Vermeulen, Chuma Maweni, and Atang Tshikare.

There is a wide range of bespoke OKHA pieces of furniture on display in key areas of the entire home. From the master bedroom and dining room to the formal lounge and lobby. Of particular note are the double trapezoidal Morpheus dining table and the ViA console in the lobby. In line with the architecture, the focus of OKHA was deliberately placed on the power of form, mass and materiality.

In the master bedroom, ARRCC used a classic ribbed wall covering in rich dark green, which together with wooden floors reflects the Cape pines that frame the windows to Camps Bay. The custom-made bed with multi-part headboard made of oak and French sugar cane, a wide, low armchair made of lush green velvet and side tables made of wood with marble top is made to measure by OKHA. The en-suite master bathroom, which combines French cane bronze and oak mirrors with Bianco Carrara marble wall-to-wall panels, provides a lively backdrop for the dramatic and atmospheric master bedroom.

SAOTA, ARRCC, and OKHA have combined luxury with maturity and sophistication in a statement that enriches the conversation about the possibilities of contemporary design.
