Spectacular turquoise ice gems emerge from Russian lake

You know something is special when people travel from around the world to a place that has temperatures well below zero just for a glimpse. Lake Baikal in Russia is known for its incredibly clear water, and in the winter months, its turquoise ice crystals.

Russian photographer Alexey Trofimov captured the “ice gem” phenomenon on film in this series of stunning images of the area. If the photos don’t quite satisfy you, you can see the frozen lake for yourself each year from January to May.
