Stolen 470 B.C. Etruscan vase recovered from New York gallery

Authorities have seized a stolen Etruscan vessel that dates back to 470 B.C. from a gallery in Manhattan, New York.  The vessel is known as “Attic Red-Figure Nolan Amphora.”

Christos Tsirogiannis, a researcher with the Scottish Center for Crime and Justice Research in Glasgow, found the amphora for sale at the Royal-Athena Galleries last month. This was the culmination of efforts exerted by Tsirogiannis in researching and going over 13,000 images and documents recovered in 2002 from Gianfranco Becchina, an Italian antiquities dealer who was convicted in 2011 of engaging in the trade in stolen important artifacts.

The Etruscan vessel, valued at $250,000, will be displayed temporarily at the Italian consulate in New York after being brought there on March 16. It will then be sent to the Polo Museale del Lazio in Italy for permanent custodianship.
