Strange charcoal artwork reminds us of the beautiful and the ugly

New Zealand-based artist and illustrator Liam Gerrard knows his charcoal. In his impressive black and white drawings, he combines iconic people, pop culture, animals, and bits of nature with dark philosophical issues, such as existential sadness, temporality, and death.

Gerrard’s detailed collages of everything that is beautiful and everything that is ugly bring out dichotomous emotions. The Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Art graduate does a convincing job of depicting all of these aspects of our lives on a paper, offering layers of meaning in each of his beautiful drawings.
