Amsterdam-based Studio Drift has turned plastic bags into 3000 blue blocks at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.
Materialism: The bag project is an installation that visualizes the physical amount of plastic that exits each Albert Heijn supermarket on an average day in Eindhoven. It’s now visible from the lower-ground floor of the Eindhoven museum for Dutch Design Week.

Together the blocks form a sculpture every time a bag leaves the store. Video clips shot in front of Albert Heijn stores display the rhythmic movements of doors opening and closing to an abstraction that demonstrates our habit of laziness.
The bag project is part of the Materialism series, an ongoing research project that explores the de-construction” or “de-production” of everyday objects.
Studio Drift founders Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta also participated in placing the blocks, in a performance piece that took place last Sunday.
We are all becoming more aware of the amount of plastic we use. But usually people only hear the hard data. We want people to also physically feel the amount of materials we use, the studio explained.
The work is about erecting bridges of understanding between people, the technosphere that contains so many black boxes so few people even think about, and the earth, on which it all relies, at least for as long as it can.
The plastic blocks that form the Van Abbemuseum installation are being sold in the museum’s gift shop during Dutch Design Week.
