For those of you who aren’t sure what an electric bike is—they’re essentially ordinary bicycles with a battery-powered motor. They’re designed to give you an extra boost when you push the pedals, making them perfect for hilly terrains or during long-distance cycles. While most e-bikes are chunky, heavy, and likely to cost you a small fortune, the new AM1 electric bike by Analog Motion is designed to be sleek, ultra-light, and affordable.

The Kickstarter-funded AM1 e-bike is designed with no frills or unnecessary gadgets—it’s a simple single-speed city bike with a lightweight 20-mile battery, ideal for daily commutes. Analog Motion say, “The AM1 is a lightweight motorized bike. It looks like a bike, handles like a bike, weighs the same as a bike but rides like you’re freewheeling downhill with a tailwind.”
So, how does it work? The designers explain, “The pedal sensor detects when you’re pedalling and assists you depending on how much effort you put in…The motor gives you a boost when you really need it. The sensor in the pedals delivers smooth, controlled power relative to the speed of your pedalling. Pedal slower to slow down, faster to speed up.”
Costing approximately $665 and weighing just 13.5kg (30lbs) including the battery, the four models in the AM1 range are fully customizable using standard bike parts. From the aerodynamic entry-level AM1 with short, straight handlebars, to the laid back, retro style of the AM1 STEP, each effortless e-bike comes in either “carbon black” or “clay gray.” Every bike arrives partly assembled, but since each element seamlessly clicks into place, it can take as little as 20 minutes before you get your AM1 on the road!
