This past April, the Sundance Institute and Artist Relief teamed up to create the $1 million Sundance Institute Respond and Reimagine Plan in order to aid film workers hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the long summer of quarantine, 60% of the plan’s funds were distributed to various artists, including 103 who participated in the Sundance Institute Labs. Now, the Institute has announced that it is providing a total of $405,500 to 39 different arts organizations. The funds do not need to be repaid, and can be spent flexibly by the recipients.
Grantees include the venerable queer cinema organization Frameline, the Miami-based filmmaking collective Third Horizon, and Brown Girls Doc Mafia, which represents thousands of BIPOC female and nonbinary nonfiction filmmaking professionals. In a press release, the Sundance Institute said: “The need to support the arts around the world will be ongoing as these organizations weather the continuing challenges of the pandemic. It’s our hope that the Sundance Institute Respond and Reimagine Plan will help support art and artists around the world.”
