Swarms of cups and hula hoops tackle human fear of swarms

Imagine you’re looking up at the sky and notice a swarm of colorful stuff flying by. It’s a magical moment and one that everyone, including photographer Thomas Jackson, is fascinated by.

The San Francisco-based photographer replicates the dynamic nature of swarms with temporary installations collectively titled, “Emergent Behaviour.” The sculptures are made up of everything from cups and balloons to ribbons and plastic food containers. Each sculpture is held together and suspended differently with some using hidden wires and others filament. Jackson describes the emotional aspect of the pieces saying, “The images attempt to tap the mixture of fear and fascination that those phenomena tend to evoke, while creating an uneasy interplay between the natural and the manufactured and the real and the imaginary. At the same time, each image is an experiment in juxtaposition.” Check out some of the sculptures below and head on over to his website for more.
