Pikachu Card to Return to Van Gogh Museum After Causing Riots

After riots prevented them from being sold as usual, Pikachu Van Gogh cards are expected to return to Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum in mid-February or March.

The cards were originally released last September as part of a collaboration between Pokémon and the Van Gogh Museum. Meant as a way of celebrating the institution’s 50th anniversary, the cards were produced with the intention of reacing a younger audience. They cards depict the iconic yellow Pokémon character in the style of van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat.

The cards were previously discontinued because they caused a riot. The museum limited sales before eventually canceling production of the cards at the end of September. Scalpers have been reselling the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat card at a premium.

Pokémon and the Van Gogh Museum decided to re-release the card and other merchandise alongside Pokémon-themed activities, Lifestyle Asia reported. This time around, the museum’s store will have tighter security.

Additionally, the card will be available in select Dutch stores, each selling roughly 100 copies. However, they will only be available to customers who spent at least €30 ($33) on Pokémon TCG merchandise.
