Takashi Murakami, known for his “Superflat” aesthetics, is probably one of Japan’s most internationally acclaimed contemporary artists. Known for his hyper, colorful take on pop art and anime culture, his most popular project in the Western world is his collaboration with Kanye West for his third album “Graduation” in 2008. However, his latest exhibition “In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow” at Gagosian Gallery in New York marked a turn to a darker, twisted approach.
The exhibition is a body of work compiling scroll paintings, totemic sculptures, and art produced as a response to contemporary society and natural disasters. Check out a selection of the works currently on display below.
