Take a closer look at the roots of one of Britain’s most popular children’s books and TV series

David McKee is a renowned creator and animator who first got his break by writing children’s books. His Mr Benn work has become widely popular, so much so that the BBC came to him and asked if he can do a series for their Watch With Mother shows. Although the series’ title got changed, he appreciated it, making it known that the show was not just for kids.

“Too much animation is a mistake when you’re storytelling. It’s often a distraction. So Mr Benn largely relied on simple camera movements – stills, pans and zooms across detailed drawings I made,” McKee said in an interview with The Guardian.

He grew up in a simple home, lived a simple life. When his first screening came up on TV, they didn’t even have a television set of their own. His parents had to watch from a furniture shop to see Mr Benn. They told the shop staff, “We needed to watch that because our son made it.”
