The Independent Photographer has only been around for around four years, but in that time span, it has awarded $85,000 in cash prizes to emerging photographers around the world. Every month, the organization hosts a themed competition — October’s topic is the very broad category of “People,” and it is still taking submissions; three winners will share a $2,000 award. September’s theme was “Street Photography,” a rich subject with a long history. Looking at the winning photographs and finalists, which were selected by the competition judge and American photographer Richard Kalvar, we’re reminded of the chaotic and energetic city streets of days not so long ago — what Kalvar describes of the winning photograph, by Maude Bardet, as “a kind of dance.”
