The Crystal Ship Recap 2018

Over the past couple of weeks we have been following the works in progress from the international participating artists to the 2018 Edition of The Crystal Ship in Ostend, Belgium, curated by Bjørn Van Poucke. With over 50 murals and interventions throughout the city, it’s the largest mural festival in Europe and open air museum.

Sea Theme

Many artists paid tribute to the city by the sea, from gentrification ( with a Squid Called Sebastian), a sailor (Joachim), the calm and storm at Sea (Colectivo Licuendo) as well as the refugee crisis (with Gaia and Icy & Sot installations.)

Nature

Polish artist Sainer from Etam Cru painted a floral landscape , while the winner of this year’s competition Chiara Daneels created a mural with vibrant colours and luxurious vegetation.

Portraits

Ben Slow painted an ‘Ode to Love… and Everything it Entails’ with a portrait of a long term couple of Ostend, Mr and Mrs Drouard, who have been together for sixty years.

Dourone illustrated the ‘Opia’ emotion through their hypnotic and colourful female portrait.

Wasp Elder painted ‘Leonie La Fontaine'( 1857- 1949), a Belgian pioneer feminist and pacifist.

Characters

In parallel to the large murals, Jaune and Oak Oak brought joy and mischief to the streets of Ostend with over 70 locations with their small funny characters and in-context interventions.

During the official launch, curator Bjørn Van Poucke introduced the participating artists and murals in front of an eager crowd and live radio station.
