The installation called “Beauty Innovation 2020” currently on display on the first floor of the Shiseido Ginza Building, is a project created by the contemporary design Studio we+, in collaboration with Shiseido Art Director Taisuke Kikuchi. This exhibition, which expresses Shiseido‘s corporate philosophy, is the second work following last year.
The delicate fluctuations is created by controlling the movement of 80 rounded papers, wind, and light. It implies that capturing and updating the diverse values of beauty will lead to innovation that changes the world.

Using wires stretched in the vertical direction, papers with 210mm in diameter were lined up uniformly in 5 rows of 16. A small circulator was installed directly below each piece of paper. By controlling the air blowing, the vertical movement of the paper is created. When the winds collide with each other, incalculable wind flow is generated, so that the paper itself behaves like a living creature, as if dancing. The 80 lights on the ceiling are linked to the movement of each piece of paper. So that the way it receives light changes as the paper moves up.
The durable and lightweight paper was selected for a three-month long-term exhibition. To utilize the exhibition space with a height of 3.5m dynamically, the shape of the circulator blades and air vents has been devised so that the paper can smoothly rise to the top.
we+ is a contemporary design studio established in 2013 by Toshiya Hayashi and Hokuto Ando. Using research and experimentation, they develop new ideas and aesthetics with unique expression techniques. Their self-initiated works are represented by Rossana Orlandi in Milan.
In addition to exhibiting their works internationally, they undertake commissioned projects for companies and other organizations, including installation, branding, product development, and graphic design. Utilizing the strengths of each member based on their diverse backgrounds and the knowledge gained from daily research, the studio continues to grow and diversify.
