New York: Between Art and Life
Martha Edelheit and Rebecca Shaykin in Conversation
In conjunction with the current New York: 1962–1964 exhibition, the Jewish Museum will present an in-person conversation between artist Martha Edelheit and Associate Curator Rebecca Shaykin.
Edelheit (b. 1931 in New York City, now based in Sweden) is a groundbreaking feminist artist whose decades-long career has resulted in a deeply probing investigation into the subject of the female body, from early works exploring the expressive power of tattoos to erotic watercolors and vivid depictions of women at various stages of their lives. Her 1962 work, “Tattooed Lady” — created just blocks from the Jewish Museum — is included in New York: 1962–1964 and will serve as the jumping point for a discussion that will touch on the artist’s life, work, and unique vision.

This in-person event will take place on Thursday, November 17, from 6:30–7:30pm (EST) at the Jewish Museum, located at Fifth Avenue and 92nd Street in New York City.

Live Virtual Art History Course
This series of three classes will focus on close looking at works of art on view in New York: 1962–1964 and their relationship to the Jewish Museum’s institutional history through an exploration of the sprawling two-floor exhibition. Topics for the course are: Materials and Materiality, Language and Mass Media, and The Body.
This online program will take place on November 29, December 6, and December 13 from 2–3pm (EST) via Zoom.
