The Metropolitan Museum of Art filed a formal proposal with the City of New York to charge an admission fee for all non-New York State residents, a contentious motion considering the museum’s longstanding ‘suggested’ entrance fee and the funding they receive from American taxpayers. As the Met building is owned by the city, The New York Times reports that, in order for the proposal to move forward, it must be approved by the administration of mayor Bill de Blasio. The city’s commissioner of cultural affairs, Tom Finkelpearl, is quoted saying, “We will review it carefully. The city is committed to working with the Met to ensure that its unrivaled collection and programming remain accessible to all New Yorkers.” Creators has previously covered the Met’s new Open Access Policy, which recently featured the museum unloading a massive portion of its collection into the public domain.
