The Modernist Hotel Sets Its Roots Inside a 1920s Heritage Building

The recently opened The Modernist Hotel in Thessaloniki, Greece strikes the perfect balance between contemporary hospitality design and old-world, heritage architecture. Set in a 1920s building that was restored by the city following a great fire, the space was converted into a 40-room boutique hotel by FORMrelated Studio in a total redesign with “a minimalist yet sensual style that pays attention to detail and moves between art deco, mid-century detailing and Danish design.”

The simplicity of the guest rooms creates a space for uncluttered relaxation that’s only enhanced as guests settle into the custom furniture and take in the room’s contemporary design details. Finishes of brass, marble and warm wood cultivate an air of effortless elegance that’s anything but cold or brash.

The black and white bathrooms are accented with matte black hardware, open sink consoles that don’t take up much visual space, and bespoke bath amenities.

Open storage and shelving systems keep the space from feeling bulky and closed off. All rooms are equipped with modern conveniences and luxuries like Nespresso coffee machines, smart TVs, Marshall speakers, wifi, 100% cotton linen bedding, and ultra-comfortable mattresses.

A variety of collaborations with local designers and crafts people keep the hotel feeling unique and authentic, including custom bath amenities from Physis Laboratory, hotel branding by Post-Spectacular Office, hotel uniforms by AMMA Garments, and custom coffee mugs by G. Vavatsis. A small shop offers these bespoke collections for hotel guests to take home as a souvenir.
