The Most Biting Memes of the Paris Bedbug Panic

This month, Paris is learning that which New Yorkers and Airbnb hosts everywhere already know: Bedbugs are a scourge. Cimex lectularius, if you’re feeling fancy, are little six-legged insects that love to hang out in bedding because it gives them access to their food source: human blood. Their bites are usually itchy and in some cases can cause strong allergic reactions, but are generally not life-threatening … just fast-proliferating and deeply disgusting. As Paris tries to mitigate the terrible PR and London scrambles to reassure citizens that every measure is being taken to prevent the dissemination of bedbugs through public transportation, the rest of us cope the best way we know how: We meme, friends, we meme.

In any crisis, there are those who want to point fingers, or simply ask, how did this happen?

Meanwhile, Parisians defend their reputation as only the French can.

And a few people came out oddly in defense of bedbugs, arousing suspicion as to their motives.

Others are offering takes that flavor the situation with the drama it deserves.

But listen, things aren’t all bad. One delighted TikToker, Helen Christie, is getting huge mileage out of that old cockroach ensemble she happened to have lying around the house.

And thanks to this outbreak, we not only get to enter the phrase “emotional witch” into the cultural zeitgeist, but we also have some truly lit Halloween costume options.

Enjoy fashion week, everyone. Sleep tight and … er … maybe best not to sleep at all. As for the rest of us, let’s enjoy these last few moments before bedbugs kick off their world tour.

Bonne chance!
