The Nawabari Collection, a collaboration between BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and BoConcept is an exploration of transforming shared spaces and bringing people together. The design was helmed by Partner and Head of BIG Products, Jakob Lange, who pulled inspiration from the Japanese art form of forging close bonds through binding with ropes. In Japanese, “nawa” means rope, and the term “nawabari” translates to stretching rope.

“When starting out with this collection, we were looking for a new way of expressing furniture,” said Lange. “We were interested in the forms that are created when a material is bound with rope. The result is these sculptural organic shapes that become the core of this furniture family.”
The Nawabari Collection includes two sofas, an armchair, two coffee tables, and two pouffes. The furniture pieces can be used individually or grouped together to create a standalone area. BIG loves exploring the intersection between work, life, and play in their work, meaning these pieces are as show-stopping in a hotel lobby as they are in a residential home or workspace.
You can even customize the Nawabari Collection to meet the needs of individual projects, including being upholstered in any of BoConcept’s fabric offerings or Gabriel’s wool-effect Blend fabric in six colors. Blend fabric carries the EU Ecolabel and is certified in accordance with STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, meaning everything has been tested for harmful substances. The Nawabari Collection in Blend fabric is also Greenguard certified, ensuring the furniture has low-emitting chemicals and a low impact on indoor air quality.
