The 80th edition of the Whitney Biennial, the survey of contemporary American art organized by the Whitney Museum in New York City, has been delayed by a year due to setbacks related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Originally slated to take place in the spring of 2021, the exhibition has now been postponed to 2022.
Like many institutions across the city, the Whitney closed its doors to the public in March to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The museum was shuttered for six months before its recent reopening on September 3, and is now prioritizing exhibitions that were postponed or cut short due to the shutdown, such as Salman Toor’s first institutional solo show.

Among the reasons cited for the postponement is the impact of the health crisis on artists’ ability to access their studios and create works. “We wanted to make sure artists had the space and time they needed to do their best work,” Scott Rothkopf, the Whitney’s senior deputy director and chief curator, told the New York Times.
The 80th Whitney Biennial is now slated to run from April through August of 2022.
