There Is Strength in Numbers in the VELIT Chair

The VELIT chair is a prime example of strength in numbers. Designed by Björn Dahlström for PLANK, the thin metal rods that make up the seating are too fragile on their own to bear the weight of a human. But together the 25 pieces – or “lines” – distribute the weight amongst themselves to create a sturdy chair with modern, graphic lines.

“I always find it intriguing to use the simple line as a basic building component when I design. It is fascinating to “weave” the lines together to create surfaces or, as in this case, an open structure that represents the seat and back,” said Dahlström. “It is important to say though, that this is not just a formal experiment, there is a lot of work that has gone into this project regarding comfort and ergonomics. All this has been done with the aim to create a very relaxed seating position, something a bit laid back to enjoy a good book and a cup of coffee.”

The VELIT chair features a metal frame of tubular steel, along with a seat and backrest of powder-coated metal wire. Available colors include ocean blue, moss green, olive green, cement grey, white, black, and hot dip zinc galvanized. Use it indoors or outdoors, wherever your space could use a little extra interest and seating.
