These Are Fingerpaintings. Seriously.

If you ever thought fingerpainting was an activity reserved for children, let Italian artist Paolo Troilo convince you otherwise. The Milan-based painter’s new solo exhibition, 8 In The Name of the Fathers, features a collection of striking new figure paintings that were made entirely by finger. Instead of a paintbrush, Troilo dips his hands into jars of black and white paint and then applies them to his canvases. His compositions feature isolated, highly idealized bodies that echo the exaggerated flair of late-Renaissance mannerist paintings. Troilo combines a careful attention to contrast and draughtsmanship with impassioned splatters of paint, resulting in graceful yet chaotic displays.

The eight canvases featured in the exhibition are dedicated to Troilo’s father, but also the father figure in general, and the roles they play (or don’t play) in any person’s life. Scenes depict expressive gestures that refer to the highs and lows experienced in any father-son relationship. The artist represents this dynamic between parent and offspring as a circle that is continuously passed down through the generations, and thus the number eight is used as a symbol of the infinite.

If you’re hoping to purchase one of Troilo’s portraits, you’re out of luck: all eight canvases that compose the exhibit have reportedly been acquired by the Gucci family for their private art collection.

8 In The Name of the Fathers is on display at the Italian Consulate in New York City from May 25th to the September 8th, 2017. Check out more work by Paolo Troilo on his website.
