Stone sculptures are vastly different from sculptures crafted inside stones. This what Matthew Simmonds excels at doing.
The sculptor carves beautiful architectural models inside of raw stone exploring the contrast between the precision of the human hand against the rough natural stone. The human interaction with the environment is also a theme in Simmonds’ new pieces. He says, “In my sculptures I am concerned with the common human achievement; the cultural expressions thrown up by different societies, and how the various cultural traditions interact with and influence each other.”
