Tombstone

These ledger sheets suggest that even in its early years French film circulated widely. By 1897, the French company Pathé, which specialized in recorded music before broadening to film, had established outlets for producing and selling recorded music and cinema equipment in big cities around the world. Scholars estimate that Pathé films accounted for 90 percent of the global film market by 1905 and 60 percent of the U.S. market by 1908. The cities listed here are Pathé branch offices and salerooms; New York, and by extension, the United States, accounted for about a third of Pathé’s film revenue.
