These photogrammes are contact prints made from 35mm negatives shot with the Lumière cinématographe. By the late 1890s, the Lumière catalogue already comprised more than one thousand films, and a film’s title alone might not have adequately distinguished its subject matter. In printed catalogues, films were illustrated by handfuls of still images or by one of these more extensive sequences.
