The diverse selections offered by marijuana dispensaries may have made us much more aware of exactly what we’re smoking, but artist Nico Mazza wants to remind us of the visual symbolism of the pipes with which we’re smoking it. Her Pussy Pipes are a series of ceramic pipes that Mazza makes by hand to be functional art objects. The pipes depict various female forms, including the famous Venus of Willendorf, with the vagina as the mouth of the pipe. “I want to reclaim the word ‘pussy’ and remind people that we have been smoking out of dicks for far too long,” Mazza tells Creators.
The Pussy Pipes are an ongoing project, and because each one is handmade, Mazza is constantly developing new forms. “I really try to vary body types to celebrate that women are unique and that there is no ideal beauty. I’ve made two iterations of the pipe, a half body, and a full body.” But Mazza admits that the functionality of the pipe is also a consideration. “I almost always make the full bodied version because it smokes really well due to the length of the stem.”

Mazza tells Creators that the name for the pipes was inadvertent, but it nevertheless fits with the feminist sentiment behind them. “I never officially named them Pussy Pipes, people just started calling them that, but I like the idea of reclaiming the word ‘pussy,'” says Mazza.
Mazza explains that she’s not trying to make a definitive statement about gender with these pipes. “We need to address that the pussy or the vagina does not define what it is to be a woman. Not all women have pussies.” Ultimately, the pipes are intended to be uplifting and whimsical. “The pipes are woman-positive, sex-positive, pleasure-positive functional art objects that are really fun to smoke out of,” says Mazza.
