Move over sand castle, we’ve graduated to the majors! New Zealand trio 3DSD (3 Dimensional Sand Drawing) consists of members Jamie Harkins, David Rendu and Constanza Tagini Nightingale. Inspired by 3D sidewalk art, the group decided to take to the beach and create these stunning optical illusions.
Utilizing a technique known as anamorphasis, 3DSD illustrates 2D landscapes and playful pictures of things like the Pantheon, a high-dive or the neighborhood skate-park onto the malleable canvas of a sandy beach. Photographed at a certain angle these images find the third dimension and come to life. Often photographed with their work, the trio seems to live within their pictures – if only for a short while, before the tide washes them away.
