This Giant Lion Sculpture Is Carved From A Single Redwood Tree

Carving wood into smooth, organic shapes is an amazing skill in its own right, but sculptors who turn raw wood into fantastic looking figures while retaining the tree’s natural grain and burls are a cut above the rest.

However, a lone sculptor could spend a decade or more carving a giant redwood into a sculpture so you need a team of artists to tackle a job that big and make it an impressive act of cooperative creativity.

Chinese architect Dengding Rui Yao hired over 20 sculptors to help him bring his massive Oriental Lion sculpture to life, and his team of artists spent 3 years carving out what would become the world’s largest redwood sculpture.

The Oriental Lion measures 47.5 feet long, 13 feet wide and 16 and a half feet tall, and it survived a 3000 mile trip to Wuhan’s Fortune Plaza Times Square in one piece, which was a feat in and of itself!
