This is not the Sistine Chapel— Old church becomes a skate park

A painter creating a mural inside of a church is not a new phenomenon (example: the Sistine Chapel), but this brightly colored mural certainly makes it seem new. In the city of Llanera, Spain, a collective of skateboarders called the Church Brigade has transformed a 100-year old church into La Iglesia Skate which translates to “The Skate Church”.

Going beyond the typical tagging signatures that are often seen in the skateboard community, Madrid-based artist Okuda San Miguel covered the walls and curved ceilings with boldly colored images and patterns.  It took San Miguel and his three assistants only seven days to finish the project which he considers to be a kind of personal retrospective that “speaks about freedom, love, and art”.
