This otherworldly design hidden in the Sahara is breathtaking! Its origin will surprise you.

Buried beneath the skin-numbing sands of the Sahara are remnants thousands of years old. Above the surface, outside of El Gouna, Egypt, is a bewildering piece of art known as ‘Desert Breath.’

In 1997, Danae Stratou, Alexandra Stratou and Stella Constantinides designed and installed pyramid-like structures and holes in a swirling fashion. The grueling task took two years to complete, spans some 280,000 square feet and has a lot more to it than meets the eye. Art lovers watch in amazement as the setting Sun causes shadows to shift dynamically, casting triangles that reach out from conical structures and make holes look like phases of the moon.
