This strange looking device is helping listeners experience the sounds of the city

It’s called Binaudios, a clever play on words for a pair of audio binoculars and truly a sight to behold. Located at the renowned Sage Gateshead, the musical center of education and exploration in the UK, the Binaudios exhibit allows users to listen to the city.

Visiters can step right up and take a listen to over fifty prerecorded sounds that sample all the city has to offer. The sounds are masterfully mixed so each noise seems to meld with the next, offering a true to life listen. The Binaudios is brainchild of artist Dominic Wilcox and creative technologist James Rutherford. The device strives to offer a magical experience that both informs and excites.
