Thousands of trees float near Mt. St. Helens from decades-old eruption

In the spring of 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington-state and became one of the most destructive events in U.S. history. Duirng the event the north face of the volcano collapsed causing a massive landslide that spanned nearly 17 miles. Catching the full impact of this landslide was Spirit Lake, located just 5 miles northeast of the volcanic crater. The result was 600-foot-high waves crashing into a northern ridge.

As the water rushed back to the lakebed it swept with it thousands of trees which had been blown away by the super-heated wall of volcanic gas. Now, more than three decades after the eruption, there are still thousands of trees floating in Spirit Lake. See the incredible pictures of present-day below.
