Tim Teven Explores the Art of Metal Deformation

The word deformation may have a slight negative connotation to it, but by definition it simply means to distort the shape or form of something. As a designer and artist, Tim Teven takes a hands-on approach to his work, trialing with different techniques and mechanical actions to misshape metal and push the boundaries of its materiality. Using sheets and tubes of metal, he has discovered new ways to work with the material and its properties, which has recently resulted in the Tube Collection.

The series consists of a variety of tables, chairs, stools, benches, vases, and shelves that highlight the malleability of metal. Teven deforms the metal carefully, bending and twisting it until it reaches its final form. There is a mix of calculated precision, as seen in the seating designs for example, and spontaneous outcomes found in the folds of the vases. Every curve and bend is a blend of technical exploration and artistic expression. Through his avant garde experimentations, Teven has uncovered new processing systems to work with the ubiquitous material, creating a self-made aesthetic unlike anything we’ve seen before.
