Tissue Series: Anatomical cross-sections in paper

We have featured Lisa Nilsson’s quilling art before but this artist is worth another beat as she had another project that we can’t miss to discuss. Nilsson had another interesting design called Tissue Series which is basically comprised of anatomical cross sections made of paper.

According to her website, these pieces are made of Japanese mulberry paper and the gilded edges of old books. If you haven’t heard yet, quilling or paper filigree is a technique of rolling and shaping narrow strips of paper. It was first practiced by Renaissance nuns and monks who are said to have made artistic use of the gilded edges of worn out bibles, and later by 18th-century ladies who made artistic use of lots of free time.

This Massachusetts-born artist finds quilling exquisitely satisfying especially the process of rendering the densely squished and lovely internal landscape of the human body in cross section. Aside from quilling, Nilsson also paints and makes assemblages. Find more of her work on her website.
