Toshio Shibata’s photography deftly blends man-made structures and natural landscapes

Toshio Shibata’s photography is a triumph in composition. The objects in his works are located such that that they are congruous with one another, the man-made structures and natural forms — some of his favorite subjects — put in complementary positions. His new solo exhibit at the Laurence Miller Gallery which features his large-format photographs exemplifies this harmony, and so the show’s title, “Harmony,” couldn’t be any more apt.

As stated in the press release for the show, Shibata’s photography is conscious not to rigorously follow Japanese artistic traditions, and yet his work manifests tenets of classical Japanese architecture when it comes to showcasing the environment it features. His perspective, thus, is unabashedly Japanese.

Shibata’s exhibit at the Laurence Miller Gallery runs until April 29 as part of this year’s Asia Week New York.
