Tragic nuclear catastrophe explored through enjoyable hobby-crafts

Our culture’s juxtaposing feelings toward war, tragedy and violence are perplexing – we simultaneously fear it and are fascinated by it. Anna Burns in collaboration with Michael Bodiam explore this phenomenon through the lens of nuclear catastrophe.

“A rampant, self-perpetuating thirst for gore and mass-destruction still runs rife among the mass media and begs plenty of questions about our appetite for the mystery and mayhem of modern combat,” the artists say. “Are we hungry, enthralled or just anaesthetised?”

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

In their series, they create nuclear-explosion-shaped sculptures from common hobby-crafts. This comparison is disturbing, inferring that we feel a similar type of enjoyment from both. We experience a trance-inducing fascination when performing repetitive craft work as well as when taking in an onslaught of media information. A comparison worth pondering.
