Unique mix of vibrant graffiti and grayscale figures create high-contrast murals

Using a form of stencil art, Martin Whatson surprises his audience with sudden, yet welcomed bursts of color amidst grayscale figures.

The Norwegian-born artist’s latest series of murals feature common elements. They all contain a monochromatic subject surrounded by or causing an explosion of colorful words and marks. Whatson was inspired by urban origins and has always been interested in decaying, cracked walls and the graffiti used to cover them up. Whatson’s works will be featured as part of a group exhibition called “LAX / ORD” at Chicago’s Vertical Gallery. Check out his latest below and find more of his indoor and outdoor work on his Instagram and website.
