Utah recognizes Robert Smithson’s ‘Spiral Jetty’ as an official state work of art

Robert Smithson’s iconic 1970 sculpture “Spiral Jetty” has been named official state work of art by the Utah Senate and the Utah House of Representatives. The earthwork sculpture, located on the northern shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah, is one of two works of art that were recently given the designation, the other being Utah’s set of ancient rock art, petroglyphs and pictographs, according to a New York Times report.

Smithson built “Spiral Jetty,” which consists purely of mud, basalt rocks and salt crystals and measures 1,500 feet (460 meters) long and 15 feet (4.6 meters) wide, in April 1970 with a team led by professional builder Robert “Bob” Phillips.

Three years after “Spiral Jetty” was constructed Smithson died in a plane crash at the age of 35. Although his death came at a young age and he produced relatively few works, many contemporary artists in various media have shown admiration for him, including Tacita Dean, Sam Durant, and Renée Green.
